I am Lorraine Dorman (MeMaw), 85 years old, and think of myself as a late 'bloomer'.

For years, there were three things that I always wanted to do: teach, paint, and write.

At age 46 I became a full time college student and earned my AA degree in Early Childhood Education and went on to teach for 15 years.

As for painting, I just dabbled along until my husband encouraged me to become serious about my painting.

I've done many paintings for my family, but now I have decided to make copies of my original paintings and sell them.

I also write cook books for my grandchildren, poetry, and essays. My 85 years in West Virginia and Florida have given me many things to write about.

"Thank you, Jesus."

Lorraine's Fruit Cakes

Do you remember or maybe heard about the old A&P stores?
All of the A&P products were high quality, but three were very famous; their Eight O' Clock freshly ground coffee, Jane Parker fruit cake, and their Spanish Bar cake. Their fruit cake with over two thirds  fruits and nuts was long known as one of America's favorites. When I was a young girl in the late 1930's, money was hard to come by and four or five dollars for a 4.6 pound fruit cake was out of the question. The A&P that we traded at had a fruit cake club. Mama paid a little each week until the total was paid and we then got our lovely fruit cake. Over the years I've baked several varieties of fruit cakes and the one I now bake reminds me of the Jane Parker. My cake is two thirds cherries, pineapple, and pecans baked into an all butter moist cake. Scrumptious! Try it -you'll like it! -Lorraine

GREEN VASE ON A LINEN TOWEL

Four petunias picked from a flower garden and put in an inexpensive vase and set on a linen tea towel. How simple- How pretty- No flower arrangements needed!
I LOVE IT!

RED VASE ON A TABLE SCARF

Needle work is not one of my talents, but it was one of my mothers, Mossie Dunn. She was the best!
The table scarf is reminiscent of all the beautiful crocheted edging my Mama put on everything from pillow cases to handkerchiefs to children's clothes. My Mother was a very special lady.
The flower arrangement has a slight oriental flair which reminds me of my daughter-in-law, Kuei Dorman. She is an accomplished artist in Chinese brush stroke on stretched silk. A lovely lady!

DAISIES

If I were a flower
A daisy I would be,
Daisies are the happiest
Do you agree?

If so, this little painting
Will brighten your day
It will make you smile
And chase your blues away!

ORIOLE

I've never seen an Oriole
But yet I hope to see one,
And just like the purple cow,
I'd rather see than be one!

"BEARS" Picnic

I painted this "cutie" in 1981 when my daughter was expecting her first child. It hung in her nursery, later in her daughter's nursery and  finally in her first grandchild's. Hopefully it will someday hang in her great grandchild's nursery.
"Another Pearl" in my necklace of memories!

Old Woody

My grandson asked me to paint a picture of an 'old woody' with a beach scene background; which I did.
When I look at this painting, I am reminded of the many times my husband and I went to Jax beach when we were dating in 1941-’42. we would swim, picnic, and sometimes just sit in his old car and talk and watch the ocean breaking on the beach. I think of these times as being slower and more relaxed. I really don’t like this super-charged electronic age we now live in. It’s moving too fast with no time for making lasting memories.
If you like the beach, the sound of the ocean, and the smell of the salty air and need some time to dream and make memories, hang this painting in your home and trip back to yesteryear.
I think of a fond memory as a pearl added to a necklace.

ARE YOU MY MOTHER?

I was first introduced to this lovely book when I taught preschoolers at Riverside Park. It's about a little bird that hatched from his egg while his mother was away from the nest. He did not know what she looked like but he went looking for her. Tracy, a little girl in my class always cried when I read this story. It is now one of my three year old great- grandson's favorites. He acts out the book with his animals. If you don't have this book, get a copy and it will become one of your favorites too!

SURFING GATOR

I painted this " Surfing Gator" for my son-law Donnie. He is an avid surfer and a dedicated Gator fan! He rarely misses a Gator game and even gets up at 5A.M. on Sunday to go surfing before he goes to church. If you are only a Gator fan and not a surfer, this painting would be an unique addition to your Gator collection.

PITCHER and DAISES

I lived with my Grandma and Grandpa Tuttle in West Virginia during the 1930's. This water pitcher is reminiscent of one that Grandma had.
They had a cow named "Bossy" who kept us with fresh milk, and butter. I remember the wooden churn and butter mold, but the red enamel pitcher filled with fresh cold milk, setting on the round oak table at meal time is one of the nicest memories of home, and our family eating together every night!

LITTLE ROOSTER

Little Rooster, so colorful and bright,
Sitting on the fence in the early morn light.
His cock-a-doodle's were so very weak,
He said, "Oh, is this as loud as I'll ever speak?"
But he struggled and struggled and this i so true,
Out came a LOUD, Cockle- Doodle- DO!
"I think I can- I think I can!"

Curious George

Who is the childrens favorite monkey, and the favorite of grown ups too?
He is one of my daughters collectibles, and she is past fifty-two.
He's cute and smart and full of mischief, always getting into this or that.
He's Curious George of course, who lives with the man with the yellow hat.
